FUNimation's DVD Releases

GundamLafarga

Every hardcore Dragonball fan knows about them, and there are hundreds of written editorials about them. Here's my opinions.

Dragonball was the second anime I ever saw, after Sailor Moon. (Thanks Daizyujin!!) And I had never even seen the US version before so I was a bit confused. I was introduced to the series with Episodes 94-96. The best episodes in the Freeza saga in my opinion. I loved the surreal feel of it and how the music helped the flow.

After doing the fansub thing for a while I caught wind of the news that FUNimation was going to release a third season UNCUT! Now, as with watching more and more anime (I have well over 150 tapes and DVDs, not counting fansubs.) I began to watch only subs and much despised most dubs, Dragonball included. After seeing the "Ginyu Saga" I was left with a sick taste in my mouth, as did most fans.

It took forever, but we have eventually recieved the original TOEI version on DVD. And thank Kami-sama that Steve Simmons is translating it! Believe me in saying that you are getting the best english translation!

The only things I miss are the previous episode/ next episode trailers. And the commercial cut was also removed. From an editorial from Steve Simmons on www.toriyama.org, he states why.

Another thing that bothered me was that the cursing, what little there is was a little bit censored. Though they fix that in the Ginyu: Double Cross disc. We see the apperance of "damn" and "bastard". This caused me to nearly fall out of my seat. I was quite happy.

Another gripe is the fact that FUNimation is releasing the DVDs out of order. We'll see Trunks next, which I don't mind to much. :P They had better dish out the goods fast to catch up!

FUNimation is also saying that they'll release GT after they finish Z. I'm wondering what the hell happened to Dragonball? They're so caught up with Z and now there are talks of GT, they've seemed to forgot the series that started them both! When we get to the Majin-Buu saga and we see the Tenkai-ichi Budokai, half the fan base won't know why Piccolo goes by his real name. Nobody knows about the Red Ribbon Army outside of the androids. Nobody knows about Piccolo Daimoh. Come on FUNimation! We want to see Dragonball too!!

Overall I enjoyed the DVDs and if FUNimation keeps there word and improves with each disc then they should get even better. Remember that FUNimation is doing this for the REAL Dragonball fans. Not the little kids who "graduated" from Pocket Monsters (Pokemon). Show them you support the format and let them know you want them as fast as possible!!
